Ryan Pace says Mitch Trubisky will remain Bears' starting QB in 2020

Bears general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy met with reporters Tuesday at Halas Hall in their end-of-year press conference following a disappointing 8-8 season that began with Super Bowl aspirations.

One of the biggest disappointments of 2019 was the regression of quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who took a step back in every major passing category. He was supposed to be ready for Nagy's advanced Level-202 course this year; he failed.

And while most of football media assumed the Bears would add competition for the starting job this offseason, Pace said (with conviction) that Trubisky will remain the starting quarterback despite his underwhelming season.

It's worth noting that Pace also declared Mike Glennon was the starter and the Bears were "fired up about that" less than two months before trading up to draft Trubisky.

All the end of season press conference discussion about Trubisky wasn't all positive, however. Pace emphasized the third-year quarterback has to become a more consistent player and said the Bears haven't made a decision on his fifth-year option.

It's safe to assume had Trubisky played well this year, there would be little hesitation to trigger that option clause.

Pace confirmed the Bears will evaluate the free-agent quarterbacks for depth, but offered no indication that competition is coming.

"We're looking to increase competition at every position," Pace said. "Mitch is our starter and we believe in Mitch and we believe in the progress that he's going to continue to make. But two of the three players in that room are free agents. The quarterback room is critical and it's important for us. We're always going to try to make it better, but as far as who it is and what we're going to do, we're not there yet."
