With the double-doink over 24 hours in the rear view mirror, all eyes are turning towards the second offseason of the Matt Nagy era.
Unlike last year's roster overhaul, the 2019 offseason won't feature a whole lot of action, though they'll have $20 million in cap space. The first of their 4 draft picks isn't until the 3rd round. The offensive line could be retooled, and both Bryce Callahan and Adrian Amos are in line for raises. Even with semi-limited cap flexibility, there are still a handful of prudent moves the Bears could make. Some could include:
Re-signing Bryce Callahan
Of all the Bears' unrestricted free agents, Callahan's probably the one they'd like to bring back the most. Callahan established himself as one of the league's premier nickel corners this season before breaking his foot in Week 13. His injury history gives the Bears some bargaining leverage, but he'll get an offer much higher than the $1.9 million a year he's currently getting. Sherrick McMannis played well in Callahan's absence, and will be making $2 million himself in 2019. Maybe the Bears draft their nickel of the future and let him develop behind McMannis next season, but it feels like Plan A is still bringing Callahan back.
Re-signing Bobbie Massie
Massie had the best year of his career, and is already on the record as saying he'd prefer to come back to Chicago. An extension seems like a natural fit, given how expensive a replacement may be. The Bears would probably let Massie walk before Callahan, or even Adrian Amos, but when the best option for both sides is clearly re-signing, these things usually get done. Even if Massie comes back, the possible departures of Eric Kush and Bryan Witzman means the Bears will have to retool their line. Which means ...
Finding another starting lineman
Outside a big Callahan extension, the guess here is that most of the Bears' available cap goes towards the offensive line. Ty Nsekhe could be a short-term, depth option. Atlanta's Ben Garland could be a cheap fit at guard. The won't be the biggest buyers on the market, but they'll be active.
Edge rushing depth
Khalil Mack was amazing this season, and Leonard Floyd showed a lot of encouraging improvement. With that said, I'm fully of the You-Can-Never-Have-Too-Much-Pass-Rushing camp, and edge depth never hurt anyone. Someone like Benson Mayowa maybe? See if Dominque Easley has anything left in the tank? Or perhaps a Long Brothers team up?
