John Groce is officially heading back to the MAC.

After his five-year tenure as the head coach at Illinois came to an end last month, the former Illini head coach was officially announced as the new head coach at Akron on Wednesday.

Groce returns to the conference where he spent four seasons as the head coach at Ohio, winning a pair of MAC tournament championships during his time there.

Groce then spent five mostly unsuccessful seasons at Illinois, compiling a 37-53 record in Big Ten play and missing the NCAA tournament in each of the past four campaigns.

Groce was fired after Illinois' second-day exit from last month's Big Ten Tournament. The Illini hired Brad Underwood to succeed Groce.
