A ceremony celebrating the groundbreaking of a new multi-million-dollar athletics complex at Northwestern was interrupted by protesters on Friday afternoon in Evanston.

According to reports from those in attendance, more than 100 protesters backing the student protests at the University of Missouri and demanding an improved university experience for black students interrupted the ceremony while athletics director Jim Phillips was speaking and delayed the event for approximately 20 minutes.

According to those reporters, the student protesters came from an earlier organized rally and did not organize specifically to interrupt this event. They were chanting and held signs referencing the ongoing protests at Missouri.

The ceremony celebrated the groundbreaking of a new, long-awaited athletics facility that will provide a new home for the football team and many other student-athletes on campus.
