10 observations: Blackhawks lose heartbreaker in overtime

Share

The Blackhawks lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 in overtime on Thursday at the United Center.

Here are 10 observations from the loss:

1. The Blackhawks were sitting in a terrific spot through two periods after leading in shot attempts (50-32), shots on goals (27-17), scoring chances (27-17) and high-danger chances (10-3), according to Natural Stat Trick. But the Lightning came out with a big push in the third period, scoring two goals in a span of 1:51, and outshooting the Blackhawks 10-1 at one point. Victor Hedman scored with 0.1 seconds left in overtime to complete the comeback.

2. Kevin Lankinen made a career-high 44 saves in Sunday's 7-2 win over Detroit. He followed that up by stopping the first 17 shots he faced before giving up two goals on three shots in the opening minutes of the third period, although it's hard to fault him for the first one. He finished with 31 saves on 34 shots for a save percentage of .912.

3. Andrei Vasilevskiy went three straight games without giving up a goal and ranks No. 1 among all goaltenders with a goals saved above average of 15.79. The Blackhawks finally ended his shutout streak by scoring twice in the second period.

4. Alex DeBrincat scored his 12th goal of the season when he redirected a shot from Patrick Kane to make it 2-0. It was DeBrincat's 99th goal of his NHL career and 199th point. He extended his point streak to seven games and has at least one point in 16 of 20 games this season.

5. Ryan Carpenter opened the scoring in the second period when he scored a shorthanded goal for his fourth tally of the season and third in two games. That means he has as many goals in the last two games as he had in 69 games all of last season. He's hot right now. And shoutout to Brandon Hagel, whose effort should not go unnoticed. That goal doesn't happen without him.

6. The Blackhawks allowed only three high-danger chances at 5-on-5, which is a new season-low. Their previous best was five (twice).

7.  The third line of Mattias Janmark, Philipp Kurashev and Carl Soderberg out-attempted (17-4) and out-chanced (8-2) the Lightning in 11:55 of 5-on-5 time. That trio was dominant.

8. The Lightning are one of the best defensive teams in the league. They average only 28 shots against per game, which ranks No. 4. The Blackhawks nearly hit that total by the second period, registering 27 shots on goal through two periods. They finished with 37.

9. Going into Thursday's matchup, the Lightning ranked 19th in blocked shots per 60 minutes at 12.4. They blocked had 29 of them in this game, which was a new season-high.

10. Dylan Strome was on the ice before morning skate after being placed in the NHL's concussion protocol on Feb. 22. Good sign as he works his way back into the lineup.
