10 observations: Hawks lose as Oilers snap winning streak

Share

The Blackhawks fell to the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 at Rogers Place on Saturday, ending their winning streak at four games.

Here are 10 observations from the loss:

1. The Blackhawks went 366:41 straight minutes without leading to start the season. They hadn't trailed in any of the first four games under interim head coach Derek King, but that streak ended at 255:53 when the Oilers scored the first goal at the 10:16 mark.

2. The first 10 minutes of the opening frame were pretty even. The final 10 minutes? Not so much. The Blackhawks hadn't given up a single goal in the first period in their first four games under interim head coach Derek King but they allowed four to the Oilers, including one on the power play and one shorthanded. The Blackhawks got into a hole way too early.

3. Duncan Keith spent his first 16 seasons in Chicago, where he won three Stanley Cups and won two Norris Trophies. He's one of the greatest Blackhawks ever and is a future first-ballot Hall of Famer. He faced his former team for the first time and logged 25:06 of ice time, which led all skaters. His season average is 20:16.

4. The Blackhawks allowed only two odd-man rushes on Wednesday against Seattle, according to Sportlogiq. They allowed three to Edmonton in the first period and nine total.

5. Kevin Lankinen got the nod in goal for Chicago, which was a surprising decision after Marc-Andre Fleury came off a strong performance in Seattle. Lankinen gave up four goals on the first 13 shots he faced before turning aside 18 in a row. He responded nicely even though his numbers don't look great on the stat sheet.

6. The Oilers have an absolutely lethal power play with a success rate of 40.8 percent through their first 16 games. They went 1-for-4 and scored two shorthanded goals. It wasn't a great night on special teams for the Blackhawks.

7. The Oilers rank No. 1 in offensive zone possession time per game at 7:56. They had 9:32 against the Blackhawks.

8. A bright spot? Alex DeBrincat stayed hot. He scored twice to give himself 11 on the season and also extended his point streak to five games. He's on pace for 53 goals this season.

9. Caleb Jones and Connor Murphy logged a shift of 4:50 to start the second period. They just couldn't get off the ice. Jujhar Khaira, Mike Hardman and Dylan Strome were each on the ice for 3:15 as well. It didn't help that Hardman lost his stick during the action.

10. Calvin de Haan did not play because of right wrist soreness. Henrik Borgstrom was also a healthy scratch. Brandon Hagel (shoulder) drew back into the lineup after a three-game absence and Mike Hardman returned after missing the last contest with an illness.
