10 observations: Fleury, Hawks shut out Canucks

Share

The Blackhawks bounced back with a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on Sunday.

Here are 10 observations from the win:

1. Marc-Andre Fleury should have been the first, second and third star of the night. He faced 40 shots and stopped every single one of them, improving to 13-0-2 in his last 15 starts against Vancouver. He's also allowed only four goals against in his last four outings. What a performance.

2. I take that back. One of the three stars should've been the post. The Canucks hit FOUR of them and Fleury showed so much love for his iron after the fourth one.

3. In the first two periods, the Canucks dominated at even strength in shot attempts (46-26), shots on goal (30-13), scoring chances (23-12) and high-danger chances (8-3), according to Natural Stat Trick. It was a very one-sided game to that point.

4. The third period, however, was a different story. At even strength, the Blackhawks led in shot attempts (19-14), shots on goal (10-4), scoring chances (7-4) and high-danger chances (3-0). It was weird how Chicago flipped the script.

5. The Canucks have had a historically bad penalty kill so far this season. They had a kill rate of 60.3 percent through their first 18 games and had allowed a power-play goal in 10 of their last 11. The Blackhawks had three power-play opportunities but were only able to muster four shots on goal and generate four scoring chances.

6. The Canucks had 8:01 of offensive zone possession time, according to Sportlogiq. The Blackhawks had 5:08. Patrick Kane led the way for Chicago at 1:16 and Connor Garland led the way for Vancouver at 1:12.

7. Welcome back, Brandon Hagel. In his second game back since his shoulder injury, he was credited with the game-winning goal after redirecting a shot from the point to make it 1-0 in the third period. It turned out to be the game winner.

8. Riley Stillman left at the midway mark of the first period with an injury. His teammate Erik Gustafsson pushed Tyler Motte into his left leg during a board battle and he did not return.

9. With the early injury to Stillman and Connor Murphy committing two penalties  one of which was a questionable call  Jake McCabe led all skaters with 10:17 of ice time in the first period. He finished with 24:58, which is a new season-high.

10. Philipp Kurashev was penalized for tripping at the 12:53 mark of the second period. He had only one more shift the entire game after that and finished with 6:25 of ice time.
