5 Takeaways: Blackhawks fall to Flames, Dylan Strome suffers ankle injury

Dylan Strome suffered a right ankle injury and the Blackhawks lost 2-1 to the Calgary Flames on Tuesday. Here are five takeaways:

Kane 1K watch

Patrick Kane collected his 993rd career point on Tuesday against the Flames. Kane was credited with a secondary assist on Dominik Kubalik's goal with 32 seconds remaining in the first period to put the Hawks up 1-0.

Kane passed it to Adam Boqvist, who shot the puck from the point with Kubalik getting a piece of it from in front of the net. 

Rookie rising 

Kubalik, a rookie forward, has goals in back-to-back games and 10 points (five goals, five assists) in his past nine. The 24-year-old has 23 points (13 goals, 10 assists) in 42 contests this season. 

"Your confidence is going higher when you're producing, so right now I feel really good and I'm just trying to build on it," Kubalik said after the game.

Don't leave Lindholm open

Flames center Elias Lindholm scored both Calgary goals on Tuesday. His first came 14 seconds into the second period and his second at 16:01 of the second. Lindholm was left unattended in the left faceoff circle to score his second goal and tally his 300th NHL point.

Killing it

The Blackhawks killed two 5-on-3 penalties and their remaining 5-on-4s Tuesday. 

John Quenneville served a too many men bench minor at 10:52 of the second period and Zack Smith was called for high-sticking at 11:47. Erik Gustafsson got called for tripping at 2:08 of the third and Smith was called for slashing at 2:51. 

"Obviously it's huge to kill it because it kept us in the game but it's hard on the guys we're using," Blackhawks head coach Jeremy Colliton said. "It was a game where we seemed to need every bit of energy, especially when you get the short bench, so not something we wanted to do."

Strome joins injured Hawks 

Dylan Strome suffered a right ankle injury in the second period and did not return to the game. Colliton said he'll know more about the injury tomorrow.
