After moving trading back with the Columbus Blue Jackets as part of the Seth Jones deal, the Blackhawks have selected defenseman Nolan Allan with the No. 32 overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.

"Just shocked," Allan said of hearing his name called. "I didn't know where I was going to go. To hear my name called in the last pick there, it was pretty exciting. The whole house erupted."

Allan, 18, registered two points (one goal, one assist) in 16 games this season with the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League. He also had five points (two goals, three assists) in five games while on loan with the La Ronge Ice Wolves of the Swedish Hockey League.

Allan compiled two points (one goal, one assist) in seven games for Team Canada at the Under-18 tournament.

"I thought Nolan was fantastic in that tournament," President/GM Stan Bowman said. "I got a chance to go down and watch him in person. He’s that guy that brings the physical side to the game, he’s a competitive player. You notice when Nolan Allan’s on the ice.

"He's got the size, the skating and the physicality. He was a really big workhorse for that Canadian team that won the gold medal. He certainly caught my eye watching that game. We think those are the types of players you need to have success in today’s game."

Allan is listed at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, carries a left-handed shot and is considered to be a physical, two-way defenseman. He tries modeling his game after Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Brayden McNabb.

"I'd say I’m a solid two-way defender," Allan said. "I think skating’s a big part of my game. I like to play physical and play hard against other teams’ top forwards and shut them down. I just try to help the team I can in any way."

Allan was ranked No. 40 on the NHL's Central Scouting Rankings among North American skaters.
