Blackhawks' Wyatt Kalynuk expected to miss ‘a little bit'

Blackhawks defenseman Wyatt Kalynuk suffered an ankle injury during Tuesday's practice and is expected to be out "for a little bit," head coach Jeremy Colliton said afterward. It could be a couple of weeks.

Kalynuk took a hard fall along the boards and stayed down for a moment before heading to the bench gingerly. He missed a few shifts during the defensemen drills while he was testing out his ankle with the trainers and later returned to finish practice.

But you could tell he was in some obvious discomfort, and now he's going to miss time.

"You feel for him, for sure," Colliton said. "He did have an excellent finish to the year and he wants it bad, so he’ll do everything he can to be back soon."

The Blackhawks open their season in Colorado on Wednesday, Oct. 13, which is eight days away. The injury puts Kalynuk's status for Opening Night in jeopardy.

Calvin de Haan, Seth Jones, Jake McCabe and Connor Murphy are virtual locks to make the 23-man roster. Caleb Jones and Riley Stillman are likely to secure the final two spots at this point, with Kalynuk returning to the mix when he's cleared for action again.
