Subban to start for Blackhawks' season opener

Three goalies battled at the Blackhawks' 2021 training camp that wrapped up Tuesday and only one will start in net for the Hawks' opener in Tampa Bay Wednesday night: Malcolm Subban.

Subban will be making his first start for the Blackhawks between the pipes against the Lightning, the defending Stanley Cup champs, to begin the year. After the team's morning skate at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Chicago head coach Jeremy Colliton, fresh off his two-year contract extension, said goalies Collin Delia and Kevin Lankinen will get a shot at the net as well.

Subban, 27, went 9-7-3 with a 3.18 goals-against average and a .890 save percentage in 20 games with the Vegas Golden Knights last season before getting traded to Chicago at the Feb. 24 deadline.

"We still haven't seen him that much, but what we've seen has been good," Colliton said of Subban on a Zoom call with Hawks media Wednesday morning. "So we want to give him a chance and it doesn't really say anything about the other two as far as how they had eight days (at training camp) to kind of compete for the spot, but that competition's going to continue. Malcolm has the first crack at it, but the other two will have their chances as well."
