Golden Knights fire head coach Gerard Gallant

The Vegas Golden Knights announced Wednesday that they fired former head coach Gerard Gallant and hired former San Jose Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer in his place.

Gallant had a 118-75-20 record with the Golden Knights and led them to the Stanley Cup Final in 2017-18, their inaugural season, losing to the Washington Capitals.

Gallant won the Jack Adams award for Coach of the Year in 2018. He also coached Vegas to the playoffs in the team's second year last season, but they were eliminated in the first round.

DeBoer, who was fired by the Sharks last month, has a 415-329-111 NHL record with the Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils and San Jose. He led the Devils and Sharks to the Stanley Cup Final in his first season with each team.

When it comes to an NHL coach's shelf life these days, things are fast and furious. In the past five years, only the Tampa Bay Lightning and Winnipeg Jets haven't seen a head coach come and go.

The Blackhawks' 35-year-old head coach Jeremy Colliton, who replaced Joel Quenneville last year on Nov. 6, is now the 16th longest-tenured coach in the league. Vegas is currently in ninth place in the Western Conference, six points ahead of the Hawks with two more games played.
