Scottie Pippen trolls Patrick Ewing on dunk anniversary

Share

Who said the Bulls-Knicks rivalry is dead?

As the Tom Thibodeau-coached Knicks prepare to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2013 and the Chicago Bulls sit on the outside looking in, Scottie Pippen reminded all of how intense the two major markets meeting up used to be — all with one simple post on social media to recognize an anniversary.

Pippen posted to his Twitter account a picture of his iconic dunk over Patrick Ewing from the 1994 playoffs with the simple phrase "'scuse me." But there was nothing gentlemanly about Pippen's vicious posterization of Ewing, who he shoved and stood over after his wreckage brought down the house at the old Chicago Stadium. Officials hit Pippen with a technical foul for taunting.

Pippen, who took a bounce pass from Pete Myers on a beautiful fast break started by a Horace Grant block of Charles Oakley and a push from B.J. Armstrong, then taunted noted movie director Spike Lee sitting courtside, telling the noted Knicks fan to "sit down." It was all part of the chaos and intensity of the rivalry and the series, which also featured Hue Hollins' infamous foul call on Pippen against Hubert Davis that turned the Knicks' Game 5 victory.

This was the season in which Pippen played top banana after Michael Jordan's stunning retirement on the eve of the season. Thursday marked the 27-year anniversary of the dunk.

The Bulls prevailed in the must-win Game 6 to send the series back to Madison Square Garden for Game 7. But the Knicks prevailed in that contest, getting the last laugh on their way to the NBA Finals that they lost to the Houston Rockets.

Or was it the last laugh? Jordan returned late the following season and the Bulls marched on to three more championships from 1996-98. No wonder Pippen feels bold enough to still taunt his fellow Hall-of-Famer.
