Each week, NBC Sports Chicago is counting down the best 10 Bulls at every position in franchise history.

Last week was the point guards. This week, the shooting guards.

Without disrespect to the lead ballhandlers of Monday past, this is a deeper category. Factoring into this list are two-guards of a number of distinctions. The supremely athletic Zach LaVine and Reggie Theus. The pure bucket-getters in Jamal Crawford and Ben Gordon. The ultimate defensive stopper in Jerry Sloan.

And, of course, you probably have a feeling who No. 1 will end up being.

Crawford’s 17.3 points-per-game scoring average in his final of four seasons in Chicago teased what was to come — a prolific scorer with the ability to put up points in bunches. It’s why he’s the oldest player in NBA history to score 50 points in a game, and the only one to notch 50-point outings with four different teams, including the Bulls.

He arrived as the seventh overall pick in 1982 amid controversy stemming from an assault case in college. He averaged 16.4 points over four seasons and, though he never played on a winning team, displayed raw scoring ability.

A crucial reserve on the second three-peat teams, the all-time league leader in 3-point percentage (45.4%) cemented his standing in franchise lore by sinking a foul-line jumper in Game 6 of the 1997 NBA Finals to down the Jazz and clinch the fifth title. On a pass from Michael Jordan, no less.

Over three seasons from 1967-70, Haskins missed just nine games and his scoring average jumped from 8.9 to 20.3 points per game. Add in his 7.6 assists and 4.6 rebounds that final season, and you can see why he makes the cut.

In some ways, his game compares favorably to another franchise scorer supreme in Reggie Theus. But as athletic as Theus was, LaVine lands at another level. He’s one of the greatest dunkers in league history. And his shooting range sometimes feels limitless — even in an abbreviated 2019-20 campaign, he broke the Bulls’ single-season record for 3-pointers with 184.

Being undersized never slowed this marksman, who seemed to play best in the biggest moments. Still the only player in NBA history to win Sixth Man of the Year as a rookie, his calm demeanor contrasted with his big shotmaking ability.

Though he nominally started at point guard during the second three-peat, he played either guard position in the positionless triangle offense. But it was his long-armed, savvy defensive play that stood out as the perfect quiet force alongside Michael Jordan’s histrionics.

Flashy on the court with a nightlife reputation off it, he played with an enthusiasm that resonated with fans. At 6-foot-7 and with ample athleticism, he possessed natural scoring ability and an almost effortless offensive style.

The Original Bull, he played with a toughness and tenacity that endeared him to fans. He earned two All-Star berths and four All-Defensive team honors and, as the longtime face of the franchise that included a head coaching stint, was the first person to have his number retired. His defensive pairing with Norm Van Lier still brings smiles to fans and frowns to opponents.
