Bulls' Dotson to play in G League bubble with Canton

The Windy City Bulls aren't fielding a team in the G League bubble that begins on the Disney World campus outside of Orlando on Feb. 10. But a Chicago Bull will be there.

Chicago native Devon Dotson, signed to a two-way contract after going undrafted out of Kansas, has been assigned to the Canton Charge and will play in at least a portion of the four-week, 18-team tournament that concludes March 6. Playoffs for eight teams are scheduled to follow. The Bulls do plan to have a scouting presence at the event, including executive vice president Artūras Karnišovas currently scheduled to be there for at least a portion.

Dotson scored four points in 9 minutes, 32 seconds of his only NBA action this season, which came during the Bulls' blowout loss to the Bucks on Jan. 1.

This season, in a nod to the impact of COVID-19, two-way players are allowed up to 50 games of service with an NBA team. Previously, players signed to such contract only were allowed 45 days of service, which included practice and travel days.

Dotson's experience mostly is coming on the NBA practice floor. That said, the Bulls left him and Luke Kornet behind on one recent trip to make sure they got conditioning and skill work.

"One of the biggest things that I haven’t really talked much about is on the road the availability of gyms," coach Billy Donovan said in explaining the move. "So you could be on a West Coast swing and a guy is maybe not in the rotation at that point in time and they’re unable to get in any work at all.

"So we want to obviously make sure we have enough players going into a road trip. But at the same point too, if somebody’s not really getting a lot of minutes, how do we keep them ready? If what’s happened in the past with us where guys have tested positive and all of a sudden, you have players missing and now when you’re calling upon somebody who maybe hasn’t been in the rotation, they’re not physically able to be prepared to handle that role and that responsibility. So it’s unusual times. We’re having to do a lot of things a lot differently. It’s just kind of the way it is. But the biggest thing I look at it as a positive because with Luke and Devon, if something else happens to our team, those guys could very easily be in the mix."

Now Dotson will be in the mix for Canton.
