Bulls' Zach LaVine surprises hero battling COVID-19 on the front lines

It’s easy to look at our favorite athletes as supernatural in their talents and abilities.

But when COVID-19 halted the sports world, the true superheroes of society emerged: front-line, essential healthcare workers and first responders, who dedicate themselves each day to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus and keep us all safe.

During NBC Sports Chicago’s “Be Chicago: Together We Can” fundraiser Wednesday night, Zach LaVine of the Bulls surprised one of those heroes, Holly Rasche, Director of Security Management Services at Northwest Community Hospital, with a message of gratitude for all of her hard work at a time when it is greatly in need.

Rasche was nominated for the surprise by her son, Shane. Here’s his note of nomination, which highlights the work Holly does, at work and at home, to take care of her family and community:

“My mom because she works at Northwest Community Hospital as the director of security emergency preparedness and switchboard. She’s been working long hours this week to help with this coronavirus crisis and that’s the reason why I want to nominate her that she’s also a great mom. Even though she works a ton of hours she still finds time to take care of my sister and my dad and me when he’s not at the firehouse. She cooks, cleans, helps with school work. She has even gone out of her way to make our birthdays special. I just turned 11 and she made my birthday so cool! I love my mom and she deserves to be surprised. She never does anything for her.”

LaVine added that when the season resumes, he would work to get Holly and Shane to a Bulls’ home game (which would be Shane’s first) and set them up with some signed merchandise, pictures and a pregame hangout on the court.

It’s the latest in a long line of philanthropic gestures by LaVine in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. But there’s no limit on ways to show love to those who keep us all safe
