On the Clock: Scouting Gonzaga forward Brandon Clarke

On the Clock: Scouting Gonzaga forward Brandon Clarke

Will the Bulls draft Gonzaga power forward Brandon Clarke? Check out our video breakdown on the bouncy defender and read scouting reports on Clarke from Mark Schanowski and Will Perdue below.

Mark Schanowski on Clarke:

"Clarke is one of the big risers in this year’s NBA Draft. Originally projected as a second-rounder, Clarke made a steady climb up draft boards by shooting 68% from the field during his junior season and then he capped it off with a 36-point , 8-rebound, 5-block shot explosion against Baylor in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Clarke can jump out of the gym and is relentless attacking the offensive glass. His ability to get extra possessions for his team will make him a valuable rotation player, a guy who can provide instant energy off the bench.

"In looking at tape of Clarke, the thing that scares me is how similar his game is to Tyrus Thomas. You remember him. He used an impressive NCAA Tournament run to become the 4th overall pick by the Bulls back in 2006. Clarke gets most of his points very close to the basket, so can he become enough of a threat from the outside that teams won’t be able to play off him and double team other players? And, is he strong enough now to defend older, stronger players in the post?

"As we all know, the Bulls traded both their backup power forwards to Washington in the Otto Porter deal so they could conceivably use an athletic power forward to provide support for Lauri Markkanen. But picking at 7th overall, you have to believe the Bulls could come up with a player who could provide more immediate impact than Brandon Clarke."

Michael Jordan professes his love for NASCAR

Did you know Michael Jordan is a huge NASCAR fan?

Sunday, Jordan attended the final race of the 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season in Miami. In an interview with NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jordan professed his fandom for the motorsport.

“I’m a big race fan. Started off when I was a kid and I grew up watching [Dale Earnhardt], Richard Petty [and] Cale Yarborough was an original 11 that I remember,” Jordan said. “Now I’m good friends with Denny Hamlin and we go way back. He’s a season ticket holder at the Hornets, and I spend a lot of time playing golf with him and obviously I’m a big NASCAR fan, so I came out to support him.

Jordan added his friendship with Hamlin goes back seven years. Hamlin is a Jordan brand athlete and Jordan owns the Charlotte Hornets, so the two have some ties.

“He’s just gotten better, and my interest in the sport has been there for a long period of time,” Jordan said. “I love watching; I set my clock every Sunday to watch NASCAR and I pay attention.”

Although he’s a big fan of the sport, Jordan said he hasn’t thought about becoming a NASCAR owner.

“I love being a fan,” he said. “I still understand the sport, but in terms of ownership, I think I’m just gonna sit back and watch it and support from afar.”
