The text messages from fellow executives kept landing on Artūras Karnišovas' phone.
"They were all telling me, 'Enjoy your night,'" Karnišovas said. "And that's what I did."
Karnišovas is working for his third NBA team. He owns a ton of substantive relationships around the basketball globe. He has been in many draft rooms before Wednesday night.
But the night also marked his first as the lead decision maker for a franchise that even he called historic upon his hire in April.
"It's special to me," Karnišovas said.
"I like the draft. I like that kind of intensity and pressure. That’s probably as close as you can get to playing days. That kind of intensity drives me," he said. "It’s our Super Bowl. All your staff is working to find a player and to draft him. And I think our staff did a wonderful job prior to the draft and during the draft with exchanging information and getting ready to draft players. I think overall we drafted players that we were targeting. And it doesn’t happen very often.
"I thought it was a very successful night. So I’m happy about it."
