Report: NBA players to receive full paychecks on April 15, future unclear

With the COVID-19 pandemic halting the NBA calendar, much remains uncertain in terms of lost revenue for the NBA.

For a time, it was thought that those ramifications might trickle into a reduction in players' salaries. And it still may. But news surfaced Thursday that the NBA will fully compensate its players on their next paycheck date, April 15, via Shams Charania of The Athletic.

As recently as March 31, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski had reported a chasm in negotiations between the NBA and NBAPA over player compensation.

From that Wojnarowski report:

The collective bargaining agreement maintains that players lose approximately 1% of salary per canceled game, based on a force majeure provision, which covers several catastrophic circumstances, including epidemics and pandemics.

Once there is a cancellation of games, the force majeure is automatically triggered under the language of the CBA.

As of this writing, the NBA has had to postpone 259 games due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but none have been cancelled yet.

The next scheduled paycheck for players is due May 1. Negotiations between the NBA and NBAPA will continue as the scope of this pandemic continues to unfurl.
