Rick Carlisle to return to Indiana as new head coach

The Indiana Pacers reportedly have hired Rick Carlisle as their head coach. The former Dallas Mavericks coach will sign a 4-year, $29 million contract.

Carlisle previously coached the Pacers from 2003-2007. He guided Indiana to the playoffs in three of four years, and coached the team to the 2004 Eastern Conference finals. Carlisle finished with 328 wins in 4 seasons with Indiana.

The 61-year-old parted ways with the Dallas Mavericks earlier this month after 13 seasons. He won the 2011 NBA Finals with the team, bringing Dallas its first Larry O’Brien Trophy.

Carlisle still had two years left on his contract with Dallas, but the Mavs have indicated that they will not seek compensation from the team that hires him as they would like his process to remain a smooth one. The Pacers will not have to give up any assets to acquire their new head coach.
