Carimi, Williams in right-tackle two-step

Chris Williams is not active in the competition at left tackle but he is being kept busy over on the other side of the line with Gabe Carimi.

Carimi is returning from season-ending knee surgery last year and has been full-go in each practice. But part of the reason for playing Williams at right tackle the past two days has been to lessen the play load on Carimi.

First time back in about 10 months now, just getting myself a little break, Carimi said. Im doing great, had the best day of practice yesterday (Wednesday) all camp. So it was good just to take a little bit off. Its getting better and better. There was a little rust in the system. Its starting to feel a lot better now.

Williams has worked in with the No. 1 offense, meaning a larger share of reps, while Carimi has played occasionally with the first unit but as often with the 2s and their lighter load.

The rotation also kept Williams in play as he works to stay in the competition at left tackle, which has now become JMarcus Webbs job to lose.

For Gabe coming off an injury, the physical part of being able to just kind of hold up, thats big, Lovie Smith said. And of course his technique is getting better, too.
