Bears Grades: Matt Forte emerges as NFL's leading rusher

Matt Forte’s catch of a seven-yard touchdown pass for the game-winning points was his fifth catch of the day and gave the Bears their second straight and momentum-building win. It gave Forte a yardage total of 109 for the game, 71 rushing and 38 on his five receptions.

His rushing yards made him the NFL’s leading rusher with 438 yards, Adrian Peterson (372) and the Minnesota Vikings having this weekend off.

Those receiving yards also moved Forte past Marty Booker into sixth place in Bears career receiving yards with 3,898.

The Kansas City Chiefs confronted the Bears with “heavy” personnel intending to focus on stopping Forte and the run game with none of the Bears’ top receivers active. The result was Forte averaging a serviceable 3.9 yards per carry, but Jacquizz Rodgers (two carries, three yards) and Jeremy Langford (two carries, two yards) were able to contribute next to nothing, although Langford netted 14 yards with a swing pass out of the backfield.

But it was the catch that was the story for the running backs, because it involved both Forte and quarterback Jay Cutler seeing a situation earlier in the game, with Forte one-on-one with a safety, and going to it with the game on the line.

“It was obviously man-to-man,” Forte said. “They kind of followed me around the whole game. It was something we saw early in the game, and we just hadn’t called it yet. He came up to the line and tried to press things. So, I ran around him. Jay put the ball only where I could get it. He made a great throw and I went up and got it. I just wanted to hold onto it.”
