Eric Semborski ‘trying to enjoy' fame from being Blackhawks' emergency goaltender

Eric Semborski got another call from the Blackhawks this week, although he wasn’t going to have to scramble to grab his goaltending equipment for this request.

“I was expecting a call from someone in Chicago around 1 and I answered and it was Scott Darling, which was a pretty big surprise,” Semborski said during the intermission of the Blackhawks’ game against the Dallas Stars. “Cool for him to reach out to me like that and ask me if I wanted to come to Chicago. Of course I said yes.”

Eight days after being the Blackhawks’ backup goaltender for a day when Corey Crawford suffered appendicitis, Semborski and his wife Kaitlyn were the team’s guests for a game. It’s been one heck of a week for Semborski, who’s done many interviews, signed several autographs and has gotten a lot of questions from kids, “a lot of them not believing me.”

“People [have been] reaching out wanting to hear my story. A lot of media interviews this week,” said Semborski, who was decked out in a suit he lacked – and got a ribbing for from the Blackhawks – when he got the call last weekend. “It’s been pretty busy but I’m having fun with it. It’s not every day you get to do this so I’m just trying to enjoy it.”

Semborski’s stay in Chicago was much like his backup stint last weekend – it’s just for a day. The experience was a tremendous one for Semborski, and while his allegiance remains with Philadelphia, he’s willing to add to his rooting interests.

“I’ve been a Flyers fan my whole life and I’ll always be a Flyers fan,” he said. “But I definitely have a team in the West now.”
