Magic may cut ties with Van Gundy after season

The Orlando Magic have been a soap opera since the season begin with franchise cornerstone Dwight Howard making it known that he wanted to be traded, then going back and forth until the trade deadline before waiving his early termination option and assuring that the entire process will be a distraction for the team next season.

The Magic are sure to be a busy team this offseason as they look for ways to please the All-Star big man in hopes of getting him to sign a long-term extension in the Sunshine State.

According to ESPNs Marc Stein, one of the likely changes will come at the coaching and general manager position, but a decision regarding both Stan Van Gundy and Otis Smith future wont be made until postseason play is concluded.

The whispers, though, have already begun to spread on the coaching grapevine that Nate McMillan will emerge as a prime replacement candidate if this is it for SVG in central Florida. McMillan has been mentioned for years as the future coach of the Bobcats given his strong ties to Charlotte, but skepticism persists about Michael Jordan's willingness to pay the sort of coaching dollars McMillan is sure to command.

The Magic have been a Jekyll and Hyde team all season; capable of competing and defeating the leagues elite teams, but also susceptible to losing large leads and getting blown out by subpar teams just as easily.

While the Howard saga tired everyone involved this season, it appears that the drama is nowhere close to an end.
