Cubs Lester can't get ball out of glove, throws mitt at Rizzo

It's been a wacky weekend at Wrigley Field.

First, a Cubs fan caught a foul ball in her drink and proceeded to chug the rest of her beer (another fan apparently accomplished the same feat in Sunday's rubber match between the Cubs and Padres). Then, Jon Lester had an odd situation happen during his start on Sunday. Clint Barmes hit a grounder back to Lester, who tried to start up a double play. But the ball was stuck in Lester's glove and he couldn't get it out. So heroically, Lester tossed his glove to Rizzo, who flung his glove off so he could catch Lester's, to get the out.

The Cubs, however, went on to lose the game, 5-2.

"Yeah, I mean obviously that isn’t something you draw up," Lester said about the play after the game. "I was more surprised that I caught the ball more than anything. And then we you go to grab it and it’s not there. I thought I missed it or knocked it down or something. It was the mad scramble there to figure out what was going on and obviously it happens in a matter of seconds. I would have liked to get the double play, but we’ll settle for the out. I never had to do that before but an out’s an out and I’ll take it any way I can."

Texas Rangers hire Cubs' Shiraz Rehman to be assistant GM

The changing of the guard continues for the Cubs this offseason.

After the team hired a new hitting coach yesterday, it was reported today that they're losing a front office member:

Rehman, who has been with the Cubs in the same position for the last seven years, will reportedly head up the Rangers' analytics department. According to the Chicago Tribune, Rehman's role was " evaluating existing systems, and recognizing and applying solutions in an effort to create competitive advantages for the organization."

All reports indicate that he'll be doing similar analytic-based work with the Rangers.
