Piniella was last employed by the San Francisco Giants in 2011 as a special consultant, but he did not return the following year.

Piniella coached the Reds to a World Series title in his first season with the team in 1990. He went on to coach the Reds until 1992, followed by the Seattle Mariners (1993-2002), Tampa Bay Rays (2003-05) and Cubs (2007-10).

With 38 games left in the season, Piniella resigned as Cubs manager on Aug. 22, 2010 to spend more time with his ailing mother.
