The Cubs legend resigned from his post as Phillies manager Friday afternoon:

Sandberg was 119-159 with the Phillies since taking over as manager late in the 2013 season. The team is just 26-48 this year, the worst record in Major League Baseball.

After his playing career, Ryno came up through the Cubs system as a manager-in-training, starting with Class-A Peoria in 2007-08 and then moving up to Double-A Tennessee in 2009 before finishing up with Triple-A Iowa in 2010.

Sandberg then moved to the Phillies organization when he was passed over for Mike Quade for the Cubs' big-league manager gig.

Sandberg managed Triple-A Lehigh from 2011-12 in the Phillies system before jumping to the big leagues and replacing Charlie Manuel in mid-August 2013.

Pete Mackanin, who is taking over as Phillies interim manager, interviewed with Theo Epstein's front office for the Cubs managerial opening before the 2012 season (Dale Sveum ended up with the job).
