Bastian Schweinsteiger nursing injury, could miss next game

Since debuting for the Fire in April, Bastian Schweinsteiger has missed just one MLS match, but that is in jeopardy.

The German midfielder missed practice on Wednesday and his status is day-to-day. Schweinsteiger left the 1-0 win at Montreal on Saturday in the 79th minute with a calf injury.

It's not clear if he will be available the upcoming game against the New York Red Bulls, a match which pits third against fifth in the Eastern Conference standings.

“He’s doing treatments," coach Veljko Paunovic said. "We are evaluating him on a daily basis. Hopefully he can be ready for the game. It’s not impossible, but we still have to be careful."

Schweinsteiger's injury comes at a time when the Fire are starting to get back key players from injury. Matt Polster played the full 90 minutes in Montreal, his first game back after missing the previous three with a recurring knee injury. Brandon Vincent came off the bench for the final few minutes after Patrick Doody left with an injury. Vincent had missed the previous seven with a quad injury. Doody did not train with the team on Wednesday.

Defender Joao Meira has missed the last three games with a calf injury. He was jogging around the field Wednesday while the team trained.

“Joao we will test him Friday to see if he can be ready for the game," Paunovic said. "Then we will decide obviously. He is cleared, now fitness wise he has to get in shape and on the level of the other guys. That’s also helpful. That’s good news for us.”
