MLS aims to expand up to 28 teams in near future

Major League Soccer is planning an expansion in the near future, looking to bump the total number of teams to 28, as announced over the weekend (h/t SBJ).

Right now, there are 20 teams in the MLS, 10 in each conference.

The original expansion plan called for 24 teams by 2020, but that is now on track for 2018, meaning another bump could be not far behind.

But the overall timetable is a little murky at the moment:

“When we talked years ago, we thought that we needed to get to 20 teams," MLS commissioner Don Garber said Sunday. "Then we set 2020 as 24 teams. We'll be at 24 teams by 2018.

"So many cities around the U.S. and Canada that want to support Major League Soccer, so we need to basically accommodate that. We’ll go to 28. We don’t know when."
