Jose Abreu's blast highlights another White Sox HR barrage

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — On Monday, Carlos Sanchez became the 20th White Sox player to hit a home run this spring.

Last spring, the White Sox homered 22 times.

Sanchez belted two, Jose Abreu added another and Matt Davidson added to his team leading total as the White Sox drubbed the Colorado Rockies 11-7 at Salt River Fields. The White Sox have blasted a major league-high 46 homers this spring.

“It’s fun to watch,” said White Sox pitcher John Danks. “It’s great for us pitchers. These guys are catching the ball and putting up runs. It makes our job that much easier. Make ‘em hit the ball, let these guys go catch it and hopefully the offense stays hot.”

The White Sox can’t expect to homer at this pace in the regular season. The dry Arizona air has certainly impacted their home-run hitting prowess to date.

But it’s better that they’re hitting them now than they don’t, manager Robin Ventura said. The 2015 White Sox only produced 136 homers, the franchise’s fewest since the 1992 team hit 110.

Two innings after he doubled high off the fence — clearly a surprise to him — Abreu hit a no-doubter to left, a 437-foot shot. Abreu, who entered the day with a 1.078 OPS, went 3-for-4 and has four homers.

Davidson drove one 394 feet to right-center field for his fifth homer. Sanchez ripped one out to right center and later lined one down just over the top of the bullpen in right for his second.

“Last year we didn’t hit homers at all and it translated pretty much (into) the season,” Ventura said. “It is Arizona and you look at it differently, but it’s nice that we’re hitting them. It’s a nice feeling any time a guy hits one. I don’t think they’re all that Arizona-ish, just floaters that go over the fence. It’s nice to see some guys swing the bat like that.”
