Morel not expected back anytime soon

Brent Morel isnt ready to give up the season just yet. But his ailing back may have the final word.

Obviously I want to play and be out there as fast as I can, but I have to be smart about it and stay away from serious surgery, Morel said following the White Soxs 11-9 loss to Houston on Sunday. Yeah, I definitely dont want to have surgery. Im going to do everything I can to not do that and hopefully with some time off I wont have to.

Morel has been on the disabled list since May 18 with a lumbar back strain. He was on a rehabilitation assignment in Triple-A Charlotte last week until pulling himself out during a game Thursday in Toledo.

It progressively got worse, kind of every day there, Morel said of his back. It felt good for a couple of days and then just got back to where it was and not being able to play.

Morel said he has an appointment Monday with a spine specialist in Chicago, and could possibly see a doctor in Los Angeles after that.

Manager Robin Ventura said he isnt expecting Morel back in the lineup anytime soon.

Were going to figure out exactly what it is and take care of it, Ventura said. If there has to be surgery, just do it. But at this point hes done a lot of things you can do without that, so well send him to somebody who can find out specifically what it is.

The time away is getting to Morel. Prior to leaving for the rehab assignment, he expressed optimism about being ready to rejoin the Sox soon. Now that return is anybodys guess.

Its just frustrating, he said. I know theyre doing everything they can. I guess its something that needs to be looked at a little more and figure out exactly whats going on, and hopefully figure out how to fix it.
