Rick Renteria looking to get everyone involved early in White Sox season

Rick Renteria wants to give his players as much playing time as possible.

That’s why the White Sox manager is making it an effort to have all of his guys start by the end of the weekend.

“Those guys are all going to play,” Renteria said. “We’ve got to give them as much opportunity to be a part of this whole process.”

Renteria said that Yolmer Sanchez, the only White Sox who hasn’t started a game yet, would get his opportunity in Sunday’s series finale.

“We’re trying to get all these guys an opportunity to use the skills that they have," Renteria said. "It’s early in the season so it’s kind of tough for me to basically take (Jose Abreu) out or Melky (Cabrera) or (Todd Frazier), or one of those guys, because we just started.”

Leury Garcia got his first start of the season on Friday in center field for rookie Jacob May. The 26-year-old Garcia went 1-for-3.

After a stellar 2016 debut, Matt Davidson is back in the lineup on Saturday. With Minnesota Twins left-hander Adalberto Mejia on the mound, Renteria opted to play the matchup and go with Davidson – who went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and a triple on Thursday – at designated hitter.

“All of those things are part of what you use for what you’re determining in terms of who’s playing or not playing,” Renteria said. “In our situation, we’re using all those things and still trying to get everybody an opportunity to go out there and play and do what they can do and try to keep them fresh.”

The White Sox have been switching back and forth between Cody Asche and Davidson at DH for the first four games of the season.

Look for the same to happen throughout the season with the rest of his lineup, as Renteria stresses the importance of getting all of his players involved.

"We're going to save those opportunities for those guys to get into the field as we continue to move forward," he said.
