JIM BOWDENTigers considering Johnny Damon & Juan Pierre with thinking of adding table setters and letting Boesch and Young make up for VMarts RBI's

That's not the worst idea ever, given the dearth of run-producers left on the free-agent market in Detroit's price range (in other words, not Prince Fielder). Johnny Damon makes sense, although it's hard to see how Juan Pierre would fit on the Tigers.

At this stage in his career, Pierre doesn't have the on-base skills to lead off. If you're into the traditional line of thinking for a leadoff hitter (speed), he didn't utilize that well at all in 2011, as he was thrown out on 17 of 44 stolen base attempts.

Defensively, Pierre's outfield mishaps cost the Sox dearly at the beginning of the 2011 season. His range took a step backward last year, too, and coupled with his poor throwing arm, his defensive value plummeted.

While it seems more likely that Detroit will sign Damon, a move to acquire Pierre in response to losing Victor Martinez would be extremely curious.
