The White Sox on Monday reinstated catcher Alex Avila from the 15-day disabled list, designated catcher Hector Sanchez for assignment and recalled right-hander Miguel Gonzalez from Triple-A Charlotte.

Avila was placed on the disabled list April 24 with a strained right hamstring he suffered while running the bases. The 29-year-old appeared in three games on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte and was hitting .214/.333/.250 in 10 games this season.

Sanchez was brought up from Charlotte after catcher Kevan Smith, who was initially promoted to replace Avila but was placed on the disabled list April 25 with sacroiliac joint dysfunction, and appeared in two games with the White Sox. By designating him for assignment, the White Sox 40-man roster decreased to 37.

With Avila out, Dioner Navarro caught fire, hitting .326/.354/.605 with two home runs in 13 games (48 plate appearances). Prior to Avila’s injury, Navarro was hitting .069/.069/.069.

Gonzalez will start Monday night against the Texas Rangers. The 31-year-old allowed five runs in 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts, two walks and one home run allowed in his only start with the White Sox this year, which came April 25 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The White Sox optioned right-hander Tommy Kahnle to Triple-A on Sunday to make room for Gonzalez on the 25-man roster.
