White Sox: Francellis Montas tosses no-hitter vs. Cubs' affiliate

With much of the focus this week being on some of the new players the White Sox are bringing in through the MLB Draft, one current top prospect stole the spotlight in Class-AA Birmingham on Tuesday.

Francellis Montas, the No. 2 prospect in the White Sox organization according to MLB.com, tossed a no-hitter in his outing with the Birmingham Barons. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up just three walks and striking out three. What makes it even sweeter for Montas and the South Siders is that he did it against the Tennessee Smokies, the Double-A affiliate of the Cubs. Top prospects such as Kyle Schwarber, Albert Almora and Dan Vogelbach were in the lineup for the Smokies today against Montas.

Montas' no-hitter is the second time a White Sox prospect has completed that feat this year. In April, Single-A pitcher James Dykstra tossed seven innings of no-hit ball against the Potomac Nationals, an affiliate of the Washington Nationals.

Montas, 22, was acquired at the 2013 MLB Trade Deadline when the South Siders shipped Jake Peavy to the Boston Red Sox in a three-team deal that saw the Red Sox send back Montas along with two other prospects. The White Sox also acquired Avisail Garcia in the trade from the Detroit Tigers.

Through 10 starts this year, Montas is 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA with the Barons.
