White Sox: Ozzie Guillen doesn't want to live in the past

CINCINNATI -- Ozzie Guillen knows his former White Sox players are excited about this weekend’s celebration of the 2005 championship. But he also imagines the current club would love nothing more than to push that title to the side, the way his squad did to the 1983 team.

Guillen, who works for ESPN Deportes and ESPN International as a baseball analyst, said from the All-Star Game on Tuesday afternoon he recalls how much hearing about Tony LaRussa’s “Winning Ugly” squad got old as he and the White Sox hoped to make new memories.

“(The reunion is) very special for everyone,” Guillen said. “But I don’t think we want to live in 2005. I think the White Sox want something better. Living off of 2005, I don’t think its fair for anyone. I think you ask Kenny (Williams), Jerry (Reinsdorf) or Rick (Hahn), they want to erase the 2005.”

Guillen said he recently spoke to Jermaine Dye, Frank Thomas and hitting coach Greg Walker about this weekend’s events -- “it’s going to be nice,” Guillen said.

“It’s a good thing everybody’s still alive,” Guillen said. “Everybody can enjoy the moment. Everybody can enjoy the time. I talked to a couple of guys -- they’re all excited about being there. Hopefully we’ll have a great time. This is about the fans -- hopefully the fans enjoy this very special day. Maybe for the 20th we might not be alive.”

Guillen’s club went 11-1 in the postseason to create some new memories for the fan base. He imagines those fans as well as the White Sox are hungry for some more.

"I think (this weekend) would be nice for the fans and front office," Guillen said, "but I bet you they’re looking forward to a good result -- not to forget it but put it to the side."
