Johnson is best known for his heroic home runs against New York in 2011 and Boston in 2008, but he also was the one who began to ruin Matt Thornton as a closer for a portion of Sox fans. As things fell apart in an early-April game against Tampa Bay last year, Johnson sealed the Rays' comeback with a three-run blast off the then-Sox clsoer, which stood as his only home run of the season until he hit that dramatic game-tying blast against the Yankees in game 162.
As he did with the Rays, Johnson will serve as an emergency backup first baseman and will likely spend most of 2012 in Charlotte. Whether he gets called up due to an injury to Paul Konerko will depend on whether he out-hits Dallas McPherson with the Knights.
