Colts quarterback Andrew Luck set to retire after preseason game versus Bears

As the Bears and Colts starters watched the third preseason game from the bench, one star was already planning his exit strategy.

During the fourth quarter of Saturday night’s game, ESPN’s Adam Schefter dropped a bomb that shook the NFL.

Luck was set to enter his seventh season, although he missed all of 2017 with an injury. An offseason leg issue has lingered into the preseason, and now he’s ready to call it quits.

The Colts opted to leave backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett on the bench for the game against the Bears because of Luck’s injury. Now, he’s their starter for Week 1, reinforcing the decision to hold him out.

Luck was shown on the sidelines with his teammates during the broadcast, riding it out for one last weekend before hanging up the cleats. The NFL will miss one of the league’s most talented quarterbacks who left a career unfulfilled.

WATCH: Eddy Pineiro nails 58-yard field goal in Bears preseason game vs. Colts

Eddy Pineiro earned a small victory when the Bears released Elliott Fry last weekend, and he was the winner again Saturday night against the Indianapolis Colts.

As the starter-less Bears offense sputtered, the young kicker had a few opportunities to cement his role in the team without having to share the kicks with anyone else.

He stepped into the spotlight and delivered a 58-yard boot right down the middle in the third quarter.

One kick isn’t going to win Pineiro the starting job, but that monster kick should go along way toward building the team’s confidence in him.

He still needs to maintain consistency through the rest of the preseason if he’s going to be the kicker in Week 1, but the third preseason game went about as well as he could have hoped.

Report: Colts will start third-string quarterback against Bears

Don’t call the Bears third preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts a “dress rehearsal,” because neither team is treating it that way.

Matt Nagy has been clear about how he feels about playing his starters in the preseason, and injury concerns are leading the Colts to follow the trend.

With Andrew Luck injured, backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett is their de-facto starter, so head coach Frank Reich plans to sit him too, according to The Athletic.

Third-string quarterback Chad Kelly is expected to get the start, with former undrafted free agent Phillip Walker to follow.

The nephew of Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly was a seventh-round pick by the Denver Broncos in 2017. He connected on just under 70 percent of his passes in the first two preseason games but is averaging only 6.6 yards per attempt.

Nicknamed “Swag” Kelly, he’s known as somewhat of a gunslinger, which could make for a more exciting preseason opponent under center.

He hasn’t had a turnover yet this preseason, but the Bears defense will be looking to nab his first.
