While seemingly everybody on the big-league roster struggles at the plate, the Cubs' top draft pick from a year ago is getting a promotion.
Javier Baez, the 2011 first-round selection out of high school, is moving from extended spring training to the Cubs' Low-A affiliate in Peoria.
Baez may not make his debut until Monday, but when he does, where will he play? He was drafted as a shortstop and though many project him to eventually move to third base or somewhere else as he advances up the ranks, he is still a shortstop right now.

But Peoria has Marco Hernandez, the Cubs' 16th-ranked prospect according to Baseball America, starting at short. They could move Hernandez to second, but Zeke DeVoss, the Cubs' 15th-best prospect, is currently occupying that spot.
No matter what they do, Baez will be getting his at-bats. He may not stay at Low-A Peoria permanently and could easily go back down to rookie ball. But the fact that he was promoted at all is at least a little bit encouraging. Reading anything more into it is just pointless right now.
