Top 10 lists like this make us all the more thankful that 2016 existed.

Before the Cubs won the World Series that year, every Cubs team that preceded it — seemingly — was a product of too much hype.

There were high expectations that evaporated. Prospects that didn’t pan out. Trades that left the North Siders woefully on the wrong end of the deal. It all congealed in the same ol’ “wait ‘till next year” mantra every October.

The 1969 Cubs were the zenith of a high hopes team that couldn’t seal the deal. One could argue that they were the most famous second place team in history. Overrated on a list like this, perhaps, because we all know — or have been told the stories — about what happened in September of that year: the Miracle Mets, the black cats, the ensuing anguish and so on.

But when the Cubs won it all in 2016, it may have softened the blow for fans on some of those “what could have beens.” There is a certain fondness for a few of the teams that came close. Some of these seasons really weren’t all that bad, were they?
