2019 top Cubs memories: Nick Castellanos unleashes legendary bat slam after home run vs. Brewers

With the year coming to a close, NBC Sports Chicago is looking back on the top moments from the 2019 Cubs season.

Nick Castellanos provided many electric moments during his two-month stint on the North Side last season. The right fielder drilled 16 home runs and 21 doubles in 51 games with the Cubs, becoming one of the team’s top hitters in a short period of time.

All home runs aren’t made equal and Castellanos hit a fair share of them with the Cubs. But one stands out above the rest, a blast the 27-year-old hit on Aug. 30 against the Brewers.

Having already hit a two-run homer in the first inning, Castellanos stepped up an inning later and absolutely crushed a 92 mph four-seam fastball to extend the Cubs lead to 5-0. The long ball was impressive, but Castellanos’ reaction was the cherry on top to the moment.

Castellanos’ swing torqued his body around, positioning him to face the Cubs dugout. With little hesitation, he raised his bat above his head with both hands, cocking it back and violently slamming it into the ground with pure ecstasy.

Two-homer game? Check. Bat flip (slam) to rival some of the best we’ve seen (i.e. Jose Bautista, Tim Anderson) in baseball in recent seasons? Check.

Castellanos’ bat slam exemplified the joy he felt playing in a pennant race for the first time since 2014, his rookie season. Although the Cubs missed the playoffs in 2019, Castellanos was everything they could have hoped for and more. He’s now a free agent, but Castellanos and the Cubs are reportedly interested in a reunion
