2020 MLB Draft: Tracking Cubs' undrafted free agent signings

Share

With 2020’s five-round June draft being MLB’s shortest in league history, a crop of undrafted free agent players became available for teams to sign on Sunday. The max signing bonus teams can offer individual players is $20K.

The Cubs have been one of the league’s most active teams on that front, signing seven players as of Sunday evening — according to Baseball America. Here is a roundup of whom they've added:

Bradlee Beesley, OF, Cal Poly

Beesley was the No. 429 overall prospect in this year’s draft, according to Baseball America. The 22-year-old stands at 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, batting and throwing right-handed. He started in right field as a freshman and sophomore at Cal Poly before moving to center as a junior and senior.

Baseball America characterizes Beesley as a contact hitter who sprays the ball around the entire field but lacks power. They add he’s a plus runner, has an above-average arm, plays an average center and is capable of playing all three outfield spots.

In four collegiate seasons (180 games), Beesley slashed .286/.352/.380.

Scott McKeon, INF, Coastal Carolina

Baseball America ranked McKeon as the No. 438 overall prospect in the draft. The 22-year-old started at shortstop for Coastal Carolina his junior and senior seasons after playing two seasons at Brunswick Junior College (N.C.).

Scouts see McKeon as a solid defensive shortstop with the ability to stick there in the pros, according to Baseball America. They have questions about whether his offensive approach will translate professionally. In two seasons at Coastal, he hit .344/.407/.500 in 79 games.

The Tigers drafted McKeon in the 21st round (No. 622 overall) in 2019.

Scott Kobos, LHP, Coastal Carolina

Kobos is a 6-foot-2, 200-pound lefty who will turn 23 in August. He started his college career at UNC Asheville (2016), transferred to St. Johns River State College (Fla.) for 2017 and then to Coastal Carolina in 2018 — where he redshirted after making four appearances (Tommy John surgery ended his season early).

In three seasons at Coastal, Kobos made 23 appearances (11 starts) while posting a 6.23 ERA in 60 2/3 innings. His strikeout-walk ratio was strong (61 K, 15 BB) and he started in four of his five appearances this season.

The Indians drafted Kobos in the 38th round (No. 1,152 overall) in 2017.

Graham Lawson, RHP, South Carolina

Lawson is a big right-hander (6-foot-2, 229 pounds) who turned 24 on June 7. He started his college career at Spartanburg Methodist College (S.C.) in 2016 and transferred to South Carolina for the ’17 season. He missed 2019 after undergoing Tommy John in July 2018.

In three seasons with the Gamecocks, Lawson sported a 5.27 ERA in 41 games (two starts), including a 1.50 ERA in six outings this season. His fastball touches the mid-to-upper 90s. The Nationals drafted him in the 12th round (No. 371 overall) in 2018.

Ben Leeper, RHP, Oklahoma State

Leeper, 6-foot, 201 pounds, turns 23 on Monday. He spent his entire college career at Oklahoma State and saw his 2016 freshman season end due to Tommy John surgery. He also underwent Tommy John as a high school senior.

In four seasons (2016, 2018-20), Leeper posted a 7.25 ERA in 54 games (four starts), striking out 99 batters compared to 56 walks. He assumed the Cowboys’ closer role in 2019, saving seven games and two more in 2020. He possesses an upper-90s fastball.

Bailey Reid, RHP, Westmont College (Calif.)

Reid comes from the NAIA, where he was Westmont’s closer from 2019-20. He didn’t allow a single earned run in 24 appearances (22 1/3 innings) over that span, striking out 43 compared to 16 walks and six hits.

In 2020, Reid struck out 20 batters in 9 2/3 innings, walking six.

Jacob Wetzel, OF, Frederick Community College (Md.)

Wetzel, 20, hails from Frederick Community College in Maryland, where he excelled on the diamond after a difficult journey. He enrolled at Old Dominion in fall 2018 but decided to transfer close to home after battling depression.

In two seasons at Frederick, Wetzel hit .367/.509/.638 in 67 games. He played center field.

Matt Mervis, 1B/RHP, Duke

Mervis was a two-way player for Duke, posting a 5.49 ERA in 50 career appearances (one start), walking 34 compared to 52 strikeouts. He allowed just two earned runs in 10 1/3 innings from 2019-20 and features a 91-92 mph fastball and 81-83 mph slider.

Offensively, he hit .278/.380/.456 and is said to have raw power. Here's what Aaron Fitt from D1Baseball.com had to say about him last fall:
