Brewers' Williams breaks hand punching wall post-celebration

The Brewers' postseason chances took a hit this week with the loss of key setup man Devin Williams, who fractured his right hand punching a wall.

Brewers president David Stearns told reporters Wednesday in Milwaukee Williams will likely miss the rest of the season due to the injury.

Williams told reporters he went out for a few drinks Sunday night after the Brewers celebrated their NL Central championship hours earlier. He said he grew upset over something on his way home, punching a wall out of frustration.

Williams will likely undergo surgery and require a plate to be inserted into his hand, according to Stearns, who added there's an outside chance Williams could return if the Brewers advance to the World Series.

Williams, the 2020 NL Reliever of the Year and Rookie of the Year, is the bridge arm between Milwaukee's vaunted rotation and All-Star closer Josh Hader.

After posting a 0.33 ERA last season, he holds a 2.50 ERA with 87 strikeouts in 54 innings this season.

Milwaukee will have homefield advantage in the NLDS, facing the winner of the NL East — either the Braves or Phillies.
