Kenney: Day games an ‘optimistic nod' to fans at Wrigley

We return to the million-dollar question – or rather, many millions of dollars. Will fans return to Wrigley Field in 2021?

“We’re headed in the right direction,” Cubs president of business operations Crane Kenney said Friday on 670 The Score. “We’ll start in Arizona, and we’ll take it day by day.”

The Cubs have approval to fill Sloan Park to 25 percent capacity in Spring Training, Kenney confirmed. Tickets are set to go on sale next week. Back in Chicago, the club has opened similar conversations with local officials for the regular season. Kenney said the team is working closely with Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s office and the state.

Last week, Dr. Allison Arwady, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, said fans returning to Chicago sporting events was “months away, realistically.”

The Cubs’ schedule, however, prepares for the possibility. Last season, the Cubs played mostly evening games to avoid travel issues and address health and safety concerns. But this year, 47 of their 81 home games are scheduled for 1:20 p.m.

“It is an optimistic nod to getting fans back in the ballpark,” Kenney said on The Score. “And day baseball at Wrigley Field is a tradition. It’s something we cherish.”
