Cubs acquire Derek Holland, reliever who has stymied left-handed hitters this season, from Giants

It might not be the flashiest move, but the Cubs made a trade that will reinforce their bullpen from the left side.

Friday, the Cubs announced that they have acquired left-hander Derek Holland and a cash consideration from the Giants for a cash consideration. To make room for Holland on the 40-man roster, the Cubs designated left-hander Tim Collins for assignment.

The Giants designated Holland for assignment on Sunday following a rough season in-between the Giants starting rotation and bullpen. The 32-year-old -- who previously pitched for the Rangers (2009-16) and White Sox (2017) -- holds a 5.90 ERA in 31 games (seven starts) though he’s worked exclusively out of relief since his last start on May 9.

While Holland’s numbers don’t look great, he’s thrived against left-handed hitters this season. Lefties are hitting just .182/.276/.195 against him, with Holland allowing just two earned runs in 21 1/3 innings (0.84 ERA).

The Cubs have been in the market for left-handed relief help, as Kyle Ryan was the the only lefty available in the bullpen following the trade of Mike Montgomery to the Royals. Ryan has pitched well this season (3.38 ERA in 45 games), but he obviously can’t pitch every game.

Where Holland fits into the Cubs bullpen, though, is sure to be interesting. With him in the picture, the Cubs bullpen looks something like this:

Craig Kimbrel
Steve Cishek
Pedro Strop
Brandon Kintzler
Kyle Ryan
Brad Brach
Tyler Chatwood
Rowan Wick
Derek Holland

The Cubs certainly won’t hold nine relievers long-term, meaning someone in the aforementioned group will have to be moved out for Holland. Wick, whom the Cubs have brought back and forth from Iowa this season, will likely be sent down to Iowa make space for Holland. The team hasn't announced anything yet, however.
