Bote returns from freak ankle sprain, Andrew Romine DFA'd

Less than two weeks after he sustained a freak ankle sprain, the Cubs activated infielder David Bote off the 10-day injured list Monday.

The club designated infielder Andrew Romine for assignment in a corresponding move.

Bote sprained his right ankle during a baserunning drill before a game against the White Sox Aug. 28, stepping on a stray baseball laying along the third base line. He rolled his ankle and fell to the ground in visible pain.

Cubs manager David Ross called the injury "significant" and didn't rule out Bote missing the rest of the season, after he hit the IL. But Bote came out of his pregame work well Monday, checking all the boxes, the Cubs said. He took batting practice and infield, and ran the bases, appearing to be moving well.

The 28-year-old is hitting .202/.270/.339 in 78 games this season.

Romine joined the Cubs roster July 30 in the aftermath of their trade deadline selloff, reuniting with brother and Cubs catcher Austin Romine. The two formed the first brother battery since 1962 in a blowout loss to the Brewers last month. Andrew pitched, with Austin behind the plate.

Romine hit .183/.234/.267 in 26 games while playing shortstop and second base.
