The Cubs activated Kris Bryant (left ring finger sprain) and Steven Souza Jr. (right hamstring strain) off the 10-day injured list Tuesday, as part of a flurry of roster moves.
In the wake of Monday’s trade deadline, the Cubs added Jose Martinez, who slides into the Cubs lineup Tuesday as the designated hitter, outfielder Cameron Maybin and left-handed reliever Josh Osich to the active roster.
In corresponding roster moves, the Cubs optioned outfielder Albert Almora Jr. to the Cubs’ South Bend alternate site and designated right-handed reliever Casey Sadler for assignment.
“It’s the worst part of this job,” Cubs manager David Ross said. “You're excited to get some new guys -- that's fun to make those phone calls. But on the flip side, there's some really tough phone calls that you have to make too.”
The club also placed right-hander Tyler Chatwood (right forearm strain) on the 10-day injured list, as Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said on Monday he expected. Left-hander Jose Quintana will fill the hole in the starting rotation and is scheduled to start a game in the Cubs’ series against the Cardinals this weekend.
The Cubs also acquired left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin at the trade deadline. He remains on the 10-day IL with a sprained finger on his pitching hand. According to Hoyer he has been cleared to throw and the Cubs hope he will return in the next couple of weeks.
