The Cubs added new pitcher Sean Newcomb to the active roster ahead of Thursday's series opener against the Pirates.

Newcomb, who will wear No. 15, is available out of the bullpen Thursday, the team said.

The Cubs acquired Newcomb from the Braves Wednesday night for veteran reliever Jesse Chavez. Atlanta designated the 28-year-old for assignment earlier this week.

It's unclear what role Newcomb will play in the bullpen, but he at least adds a second lefty to the group, along with Daniel Norris.

"We'll wait and see. I don't want to prejudge a guy before I've gotten my eyes on him," David Ross said Thursday. "I know he's had some major league success; he's had some adversity.

"We'll get him over here and we'll try to fit him into our plans and how he can help us win. I think he can help us win, and we'll see. But I just need to get to know the human first and get my eyes on him."

Newcomb, the 15th overall pick in 2014 and a former top 25 prospect, went 12-9 with a 3.90 ERA in 31 games (30 starts) in 2018 with Atlanta.

He followed that up with a strong 2019 season largely spent in the bullpen (3.16 ERA in 55 games, four starts) but has struggled with command the past few seasons, holding a 6.5 BB/9 since 2020 (in 51 innings).

In three appearances with Atlanta this season, he allowed four runs, seven hits and four walks in five innings.
