The Cubs selected the contract of outfielder Ian Miller from their South Bend alternate site on Sunday.

Miller joined the Cubs over the winter on a minor league deal. The speedy 28-year-old has played in 12 career big league games, all with the Twins last season. He’s stolen 243 bases across seven minors season, including 30+ in each of the past five.

Miller impressed in spring training back in March, hitting .371 (13-for-35) in 20 games with eight stolen bases.

“He understands how he's going to impact the game,” Cubs manager David Ross said Sunday. “He went down to South Bend and worked on more of his game, [continuing] to try to impact the little things, whether it's legs or the bat or on defense.”

The Cubs had an open spot on their 28-man active roster after Kris Bryant hit the injured list on Saturday. To make room for Miller on the 40-man roster, the club transferred James Norwood (right shoulder inflammation) to the 45-day injured list.

The Cubs also signed corner infielder Patrick Wisdom to a minor league deal and assigned him to South Bend. The 28-year-old is a .224/.306/.408 hitter in 41 games across two big league seasons (2018-19 with St. Louis and Texas).

The Cubs player pool stands at 58
