The Cubs announced a series of roster moves on Saturday, which include claiming infielder Ildemaro Vargas off waivers from the Twins.
Vargas, 29, is a career .255/.284/.385 hitter across four seasons (136 games) with Minnesota and Arizona. In 18 games (42 at- bats) between the two clubs this season, he's hitting .190/.222/.262. He has yet to report to the Cubs.
Further, the Cubs released right-hander Jharel Cotton. He didn't make any big league appearances with the Cubs and allowed seven earned runs in 6 2/3 innings in spring training/summer training camp.

Cotton, acquired from Oakland last November, was optioned to the Cubs alternate training site in South Bend in July before they designated him for assignment on Aug. 16. He was outrighted off the 40-man roster on Aug. 20.
The Mariners also claimed right-hander Casey Sadler off waivers from the Cubs, who DFA-ed him on Tuesday. Sadler allowed six earned runs in 9 1/3 innings (5.79 ERA) this season.
